2017 Resolutions

Time for another goals post. (Because you know I'd rather call them goals than resolutions.) I've discovered I do like blogging about my goals for the year for a few reasons. One, it feels like getting some accountability, whether you guys are asking me about my progress or not. Two, it's easy to find and see what my goals are in the middle of July when I've been slacking and can't remember. Three, it's fun to look back and see how I did when I'm making new goals! Here's a quick recap on last year. We went to at least two new places (camping in MO and at the Indiana Dunes). I read 7.5 books which was okay but still needs improvement. There were a lot of days I had to be cheerfully intentional with our living room torn up and Dearest Carl working away. And then I started in on the last one and ultimately failed. But you can't win them all, right?

Moving on to this year. Dearest Carl and I sat down January 1st and talked about all our goals for the year, including personal goals, travel goals, house projects and everything else you can think of. Then we laid them out by month and by the end, it felt so good! We are on the same page, working towards the same goals, each month. It's wonderful. But even before we did that, I sat down and thought up just a few personal goals for myself. I stuck with four because I feel like four is doable and not flipping my whole life upside down. So without further ado, here's what I'm working on this year:

1. Get up earlier. Dearest Carl is a night owl and over the past few months, I've gotten in the habit of staying up too late and sleeping in. Now that works fine for some people except that I'm most productive in the morning. So when I roll out of bed at 9, I don't get as much done as I hoped. This year, my goal is to be getting up at 6:30 (at least on week days). Carl jumped on this with me so together, we're starting to get up at 7:30 and taking slow steps toward our goal. I know it will get easier when the sun comes up earlier.

2. Keep reading. Two years ago my goal was a book a month. I still don't think that's unreasonable but I've discovered it really takes choosing to use my free time well (aka, more reading, less Minecraft). Currently I have a stack of books to be read so this year, my goal is to continue choosing pages over screens and see how far I get.

3. Exercise together! For a few weeks last Fall, Dearest Carl and I got outside and did something almost every day for a half an hour. And I loved it. Not only were we getting active together (a first in our relationship) but it gave us uninterrupted time to talk about the week or the month or what's for dinner or whatever! This year our goal is to exercise together at least two days a week.

4. Shake it up. I'm a planner, as many of you know. I like my calendars and to do lists and ducks in a neat and tidy row. Some of that will never go away, but I think I could definitely loosen up. So this year, I want to be more spontaneous and try some different things in our daily lives. My first step, switching grocery day to Wednesday after it's been Friday for four years. Wild, right? I also want to open up our home as much as possible in the coming year so don't be surprised if you get a last minute invitation to a movie night or game night.

We've already started in on a few of these goals and I'm excited to see how it will go!

What We're Eating

Good morning! Everybody have a good weekend? Ours was just lovely. It was the perfect mix of socializing and relaxing and now I'm ready to tackle the week. This week I'm looking forward to a movie night with my sister, dinner with the Iceland crew and then Friday's stay at home date night!

We weren't home enough to eat turkey this weekend so I'm still trying to think of ways to cook with it. Hence the turkey noodle soup. We've also put it on salad and I could still make wraps. Maybe I should write a book about all the ways to use up a turkey...

Monday: Turkey Noodle Soup and Biscuits
Tuesday: BLTs, Chips and Fruit
Wednesday: Cheese and Crackers
Thursday: Stuffed Shells and Breadsticks
Friday: Ordering pizza to eat while we binge on Netflix's new Series of Unfortunate Events!

What are you cooking up this week?

Frivolous Friday

Happy Friday! How was your week? Mine was just right, not too fast, not too slow. We've been eating turkey in salads and sandwiches and soups all week and there are still leftovers. Is it okay to feed turkey to the cat? Just kidding... kinda...

This weekend we have a wedding and I'm planning on trying to break in my snow boots a little more. Plus I bought chai tea at the grocery which means the homemade chai tea lattes will be flowing at our house! And there's enough cheese for a cheese plate at some point. It's going to be a good one for sure. What are you up to this weekend?

Something has changed within me

Pretty country kitchen

Go go goat cheese

Some good resolutions

My hands definitely need this

Love this idea!

Time for some quiet

Have a good one!

Dating in January

Two years ago, I planned a Christmas themed date for each week of December. I thought then what a wonderful thing it was to take intentional time outs for each other weekly and how nice it would be to do it every month. And then I promptly forgot about it after Christmas. Until recently. No matter how long you've been together, most couples could use some help with date night which is where I come in. Once a month this year, I'm going to give you a date idea for each week of the month. Some of them will require money, some won't, some will have something to talk about, some will be a service type project, hopefully all of them will inspire you to date your spouse! Without further ado, here are four date ideas for January.

Ice Skating - Most of us probably aren't expert figure skaters which means this date night is the perfect excuse to hold hands all night long.

The Chronicles of Narnia Date Night - The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is a great wintery movie. Copy the Beaver's meal of fish, potatoes, marmalade sticky rolls and tea and curl up while you watch this together. Great option for a week you can't get a sitter!

Coffee and Goals - Grab a new clean notebook and head to your favorite coffee shop to talk about your goals for the new year. Make sure you cover both your family goals and your personal ones.

Play in the snow - Indiana is bound to have another good snow left in her this year. Reach the inner child in you and get outside to build a snowman and have a snowball fight.

Inspired By...

This year I've decided to reformat these posts. I'm inspired by so many images that it can be time consuming to choose only six. Plus, I'm a writer, not a photographer. Writing is part of what this blog is about. So this year, for these Inspired By posts, I'm going to choose one image a month and some words. They might be my words, they might be other people's words, they might relate to the month, they might relate to my life. But just so you know what to expect for 2017. Here goes nothing.

What We're Eating

Happy new year! I hope everyone had a great new years celebration over the weekend! Our party was a great success and we didn't get to bed until 3:30 am. Just a little past my bedtime. Then yesterday, Dearest Carl and I sat down and drew up a list of monthly goals for 2017, going all the way to December. It was great to think about things we wanted to achieve, personally and together, and to come up with specifics for success. It's probably the most productive thing we've ever done. So we're starting off the week with a good handle on 2017 and that's the best I could ever ask for.

This week's menu came together when I realized I had a turkey in the freezer. So I'm cooking that up because I can and I'm going to work it into almost every meal all week.

Monday: Clam Chowder, Cheese and crackers
Tuesday: Turkey, Green Beans and Sweet Potatoes
Wednesday: Turkey Pot Pie
Thursday: Turkey and Brie Quesadillas
Friday: Sweet Potato Breakfast Bowl

What cozy things are you looking forward to making this month?
